In 1980, the Austrian Army announced that it was looking for a replacement for the obsolete Walther P38 pistols. Glock assembled a team of experts and produced a working prototype within three months. The new gun was named the Glock 17 because it was the company's seventeenth set of technical drawings. After rigorous testing by the Austrian army, the Glock 17 was the winner of the competition. In 1982, the Glock was adopted by the Austrian army as the P80 (Pistol 80). The trigger mechanism has a Single Action design.

The safety against accidental firing is, as in the case of the real steel pistol, solved by a trigger safety. The trigger must be pressed on the centre to deactivate the safety. The gun also has a switchable safety located under the barrel.

Under the barrel is a single-slot RIS rail for mounting accessories such as a flashlight or laser. The gun has a functional slide catch, a high quality metal hop-up chamber with VSR bucking, adjustable hop-up and polycarbonate nozzle.

The CO2 cartridge is inserted into a metal magazine with a capacity of 18 BBs. The tightening screw of the cartridge is accessible by removing the cap of the magazine. A nice detail is that the cap stays on the magazine after sliding it out, so there is no risk of losing it.
