The VAR 2 gas stove will be appreciated by hiking, performance, water and cycling enthusiasts because the stove has a minimum weight (110 g) and high performance with negligible dimensions. Also, its easy operation, lightning-fast start-up, easy flame control and low maintenance make the VAR 2 an excellent helper on your travels.
The universal VAR 2 is suitable for everyday hiking as well as for climbing at the highest level - here the use of a windbreak is necessary. The stove provides surface heating of the container, making it suitable for preparing meals. With the use of a windscreen, it is also more efficient at heating water than the earlier VAR 1.
It is supplied in a fabric case.
Performance of the VAR 2
2800 W, one litre of water boils in five minutes.
The actual operation of the stove is ensured by the use of propane-butane cartridges, which are manufactured by a number of companies in a wide range of cubic capacities, from 100 ml to 750 ml, which allows the weight of the equipment to be reduced to a minimum. In order to use the wind shield, it is necessary to use a VAR CGV 425, Meva 230g, Meva 450g or dimensionally equivalent cartridge. The stove provides a reliable leak-proof seal in conjunction with VAR cartridges, if you decide to use cartridges of other brands, make sure the cartridge-stove system is perfectly sealed.
Gas consumption of the VAR 2 stove
The gas consumption depends on the gas flow through the nozzle, and therefore on its size, which is the only constant variable. Therefore, it is quite difficult to determine the gas consumption. The variability of the flow rate through the nozzle depends on the pressure of the gas in the cartridge, which in turn depends on the temperature of the gas in the cartridge, which is determined by the ambient temperature. For example, if the ambient temperature and therefore the gas temperature in the cartridge is 14°C, the pressure in the 30:70 P-B gas cartridge is 210 kPa and the gas consumption is 150 g/hr with the valve fully open. A VAR CGV 220 cartridge with a gas content of 220 g would have a full power life of 1.46 hours - 220/150=1.46. Only in theory, because the cartridge cools down by rapid gas consumption and the gas consumption decreases, thus the gas consumption and of course the stove performance. The cartridge here actually has a life of about two hours. Any consumption figures are either strictly technical but hardly useful for practical information - or completely vague and misleading.
Lessons from practice
The only reliable guide is practical knowledge: it is proven that, if the wind shield is used consistently, if the amount of water actually needed is heated, if foods that do not need a long boiling time such as potatoes or rice are cooked, one 220 g cartridge can last a week for two people.
It is advantageous to have two cartridges and to check this statement first and not to be nervous and perhaps even to save unnecessarily at the expense of drinking. The second full or nearly full cartridge will still be ready for the next event in a year without loss of contents.
